Cannabis plants are covered in tiny, crystal-like structures that give high-quality buds their frosty appearance. These structures are called trichomes, and they play a crucial role in the potency, aroma, and effects of cannabis. Understanding trichomes helps consumers, growers, and enthusiasts better appreciate how cannabis works.
What Are Trichomes?
Trichomes are microscopic, hair-like glands that grow on the surface of cannabis flowers, leaves, and stems. The word “trichome” comes from the Greek word trichoma, meaning “hair growth.”
In cannabis, trichomes are specialized glandular structures that produce and store the plant’s most important compounds, including:
- Cannabinoids (such as THC and CBD)
- Terpenes (aromatic compounds responsible for scent and flavor)
- Flavonoids (compounds that may contribute to color and additional therapeutic effects)
These compounds are synthesized inside the trichome’s resin glands. This is why the sticky resin on cannabis flowers is so valuable.
According to research published in Frontiers in Plant Science, glandular trichomes produce the majority of cannabis’s biologically active compounds.
The Three Main Types of Cannabis Trichomes
Cannabis plants produce three primary types of trichomes, each with a different structure and role.
1. Bulbous Trichomes
These are the smallest type, measuring only about 10–15 microns.
Characteristics include:
- Microscopic and difficult to see without magnification
- Found across the entire cannabis plant
- Contain small amounts of cannabinoids
Capitate-Sessile Trichomes
These trichomes are slightly larger and more visible under magnification.
Key traits include:
- A glandular head attached directly to the plant surface
- Production of cannabinoids and aromatic compounds
- Commonly found on sugar leaves and flowers
Capitate-Stalked Trichomes
These are the largest and most important trichomes for cannabis potency.
Features include:
- A visible stalk with a large resin gland on top
- High concentration on mature cannabis flowers
- Production of most THC, CBD, and terpenes
When cannabis buds appear frosty or coated in crystals, those crystals are primarily capitate-stalked trichomes.
Why Trichomes Matter
For cannabis users, trichomes contain the compounds responsible for many of the plant’s key characteristics, including:
- Psychoactive effects
- Flavor and aroma
- Potential therapeutic benefits
Because cannabinoids and terpenes are produced inside trichomes, their presence is often associated with higher-quality cannabis flowers.
